Help a tourist get from Cardiff, Wales to Pontycymmer (Pontycymmr) and back.

I have three days in Cardiff coming up. The day in the middle I have nothing to do. I do, however have to be back in Cardiff for 9pm that night. I'd like to visit Pontycymmer for the day.

I will be arriving in Cardiff via train from London. I will be staying each night in Cardiff in a hotel.

I am open to ALL ideas on how to get to Pontycymmer and back. taxi? rent a car? bus? anything. i need ideas. Please be specific as possible.

Thanks so much!

Best answer: Bus or train to Bridgend, then bus to Pontycymmer. The train from Cardiff is a lot faster than the bus, and the train station's a very short walk from the bus station.

(And the 12 and 14 buses from Bridgend go to Pontycymmer.)

Best answer: holgate's got you sorted. That's the way to do it.

Here's another site that you might find useful, though: Traveline Cymru. It's a straightforward public transport planner for all of Wales.

fakelvis's deserves a best, because Traveline Cymru shows a faster all-bus option to Bridgend than the ones I linked: the 100 Cardiff-Swansea route [pdf], which doesn't stop as often. For that, you change at the Odeon near the M4.
