Published studies on effective presentations

Peer review filter: seeking published studies on effective presentations, their preparation and delivery. Not looking for "how-to" books or webpages on the topic.
Much has been written about presentations, and how to prepare / deliver them, but what of actual research on the topic?
Assume I know nothing about the topic, but want read empirical studies, not opinions or books by trainers.

Response by poster: Thank you! I have a few books by Tufte - will check which ones. The Felkey article looks good.

Also, Edward Tufte, king of visually representing data, has written an essay on PowerPoint that may have some useful information for you. I don't have access to the text of it right now, so I'm not sure. It's pretty short, though, so it might be worth checking out:
