Smokers and ex-smokers: Why did you start smoking? if you're an ex-smoker, why did you quit?

When did you start smoking and why? If you quit, why? Tired of feeling bad? Health problems? The smell? Pressure from friends or lovers? Can you describe the moment when you went, "I don't think I want to do this anymore"?

Why did I start smoking (again)? Because I decided I don't care all that much about a long life. I'd rather have a cigarette. And I was in Berlin. But I'm only a social smoker. I haven't quit, but the first time I quit was because a) I didn't smoke that much and b) my girlfriend at the time didn't smoke at all and found it gross.

Paying $10 a pack in Chicago didn't make me quit, though it should have. I got tired of being "the smoker" and having to go outside to smoke while people continued to hang out inside. I hated feeling like I needed cigarettes.
