Love in the latter half of life

Recommend or share with me stories of love found in later life. Your maiden aunt who met the woman of her dreams at 60. The guy down the street who was swept off his feet in his forties. Nursing home romances. Thirty year marriages between couples who met in their fifties. Family folklore, Victorian novels, art films, stories you heard eavesdropping on the bus. All sexual orientations welcome. Bonus points for for stories of finding a first love in the second half of life.

Nursing home romances.

Oh em gee, SO, my grandma was feeling SO SAD about turning 90 last year that the whole family started collecting awesome old people stories. Here is the best one:

So Betty is an elderly lady in assisted living who is the flyest, most popular elderly lady at Shady Pines, and she meets a lovely fellow and they start getting serious and, well, maybe they are dating!

Great! thinks Betty's son. We'll invite him to Mom's 90th birthday party!

He is planning a big to-do for her because 90! So awesome! Huge milestone! They only stock like TWO birthday cards for 90 year old people at Hallmark versus 852 (approx.) for being an over the hill 30 year old.

But then Betty calls her son one day and says, ahhh, I think we need to cancel the birthday party.

But why, Mom?

Welllll, says Betty. You see, James is only 77. And, well...

What, Mom?

Well, I guess I told him I was 79, not 89!

Mom!

Here comes the only direct quote of the story:

"What was I supposed to do?" Betty cries. "I didn't want him to think he was with some old lady!"

POSTSCRIPT: Betty had a second 80th birthday party. There was a lovely to-do. She and James got married. She nursed him through a two-year-long final illness. SHE OUTLIVED HIM. And he never knew she was a 90 year old bride.

There's nothing like that in my family that I know of, but I came across a great book on the subject a few years ago. All I remembered right now was it had a sortof white cover. Oh, these are only stories of finding a first or early love later in life. I have found it:

My Boyfriend's Back: Fifty True Stories of Reconnecting with a Long-Lost Love

(Not my usual thing for a book but I remember just tearing through it.)

This one looks interesting too, but I do not recall reading it:

Lost & Found Lovers: Facts and Fantasies of Rekindled Romances
