Help middle name my baby!
February 28, 2012 6:55 AM
"______" is my middle name!" Help us pick a cool middle name for our second son!
Our first son's name is Xander Danger. We're expecting our second son in just under 3 weeks (yikes!). Our friends and family are so enamored (mostly) with Danger as a middle name, that they're expecting something equally awesome.
We've been trying to stick within the following framework:
1. Fits the mold "_____ is my middle name"
and
2. Is 'Name-y'. Danger is good, because it sounds like a name (in fact, people have asked if it's a family/ethnic name).
We liked Hero (moslty if we were having a girl), but it fails rule 1. We considered Adventure, but it fails rule 2. Some ideas we've though of, but not completely loved were Bravery and Valor. I also came across an actress who's son's middle name is Science. I like this (mom's a neuroscientist, I'm an engineer), but I'm not sold on it.
That said, with only 3 weeks, if you've got a cool, off beat suggestion that fails one or both rules, I'd love to hear it!
Finally, no, we haven't picked a first name either.

It's really hard to suggest something without knowing the first name. I assume that's what your son will be called by friends and family, so I'd say find a nice first name since it will be used more and is more important, then search something that sounds good with it as middle name.

I wouldn't worry so much that it sounds name-y, because to be honest Danger does not connote anything for me other than that very saying! Why not go whole-hog and choose Trouble which makes the most sense and could be pretty great on a girl who wears it well?

You want to look at a list of virtues. That's the vein you're thinking in. There is, in fact, a history of naming people, particularly girls, after virtues. Hope, Charity, Prudence, Grace etc.
So, take a look at some virtues and use that as a name list.
Confidence doesn't sound terrible. Neither does Eloquence, Honor,

If you are giving him an unusual first name, maybe a more conventional middle name would be a favor to him, in case he loathes the first name.
We gave our daughter an unusual first name, and then chose Louise for the middle name, in case she hated her first name. Fortunately she doesn't, but she also likes Louise.

"Danger" isn't at all "name-y"; people are probably just asking if it's a family/ethnic name to be polite. I'd go ahead and throw that requirement out the window and just pick what you want.
A couple others:
Style - sounds particularly good with your last name, too
Game
Art - actually is "name-y", if that does end up mattering
Metal
Seven - because why not?
Busy
FYI - "Action is My Middle Name" is the title of a Morrissey song, if that matters. Sorry if someone's already pointed that out and I missed it!

If I was a kid, I'd be much more embarrased about Awesome than I would about Danger. Danger is fun and cool, Awesome sounds like you're bigging yourself up, despite the fact it was chosen by your parents. Also, people might always wonder whether you chose it yourself, later in life. However, if I'd chosen Danger myself, I don't think people would judge me too bad on that. I'd get the joke.
So my two pennorth is to choose one that is funny but not braggish. So not Awesome, or Hero. More Lucky, or Trouble.

Lucky
Side note from the world of veterinary medicine: If you have a patient named Lucky roll up to the veterinary emergency room, standard assumption is that they are going to be a medical trainwreck -- hard to diagnose, no treatments will go right, there will be multiple complications, etc. In short, the name is a jinx. Not sure if that stereotype holds true for humans, but something to think about if you are hoping to avoid prophecy.

I personally would pick something from Homer: Nestor, Ajax, Odysseus, Hector, Menelaus, Idomeneus, Sarpedon, Telemachus. Not all of come out well in the end, but they are great middle names.
You could also go with a lesser known Anglo-Saxon king, like Cynric or Ceolwulf.

Fearless, Independent, Dare/ Daring, Slapstick, Chivalry, Valiant? I think Valor is a cool suggestion too. Or maybe Hilarity! Riot? Jocose? (too obscure?)
I think Awesome seems too obvious. It's not terrible but you could definitely do better.

Justice as a middle name reminds me far too much of the baby a few years ago infamously named "Aryan Justice." (Though that was a girl.)
I like Awesome. Strong also seems like it would be a good middle name, kind of name-y. Also, in the world of being "prophetic" is a little easier on the parents than Trouble.

Action and Valour are both great, and they fit in well with Danger without being prophetic themselves. Valiant could be cool, especially because of Prince Valiant.

The best real-world example I know of in this format is claimed by Charles Hard Townes. It's not particularly name-like, but at least there's precedent.
If it's gotta sound like a name, how about Justice, Dignity, or Chance?
Though, Solidarity, mentioned above, is fantastic. It also easily shortens to Sol, which is schoolyard-compatible.
If it were me, there's no way I'd waste the opportunity to expand the definition of what counts as a name. Either that, or I'd tell the kid he gets to choose his own middle name as a coming-of-age ritual. It always seemed unfair to me that people get saddled with names long before they can even speak. (But, as someone who is never going to have kids, I have the luxury of not having to explain to an eight year old why bullies make fun of his name, so those are easy comments to make.)

The more I think about it, the more I like "Brevity." I think I'll have to tuck that one away as a possible first name for my own child someday. I just love the idea of a little literary nerd running around the playground yelling "I AM the soul of wit!"
It would probably jinx him to be the most non-literary person ever though, drat.

(mom here) You guys are fantastic, we now have way too many good names to choose from, and some are just hilarious even if they will never happen (Mayhem and Trouble are just asking for it a little too much, and the first has proven enough of a handful with the Danger moniker). We'll have to put something thought into this and pair them with our first name ideas and see what comes out. We'll do our best to post our choice once we make it.

So apparently the little man did not want to come out, which delayed the name posting, but he finally made his appearance the other day (Sat). In the end, we narrowed the list down to the top possibilities (including Mystery and The as some of the top runners), then asked his big brother for his opinion, and thus, we ended up with.....
Connor Hero.
So we ended up back to one we started with, but all of you guys' help was fantastic, his brother just wanted a hero little brother apparently.
Thanks again!
