Turn me on to some new music?
February 12, 2012 2:35 PM

I'm hoping to find specific song & band suggestions, given that I'm interested in things akin to the following:

"Carry Me Ohio" - Sun Kil Moon
"Why They Are Playing So Loudly" - Centro-Matic
"Over My Head" - Red House Painters
"History of Lovers" - Iron & Wine with Calexico
"Charred Resentment the Same" - South San Gabriel
"Tear Stained Eye" - Son Volt

Bonus points if I can gear snippets at iTunes.

"New Partner" - Bonny "Prince" Billy (Really all of Greatest Palace Songs)
"I've Been Riding With The Ghost" - Songs: Ohia

Those are what I've got off the top of my head; I might have a few more after I get home and can consult iTunes.

I can't help you with suggestions, but this sort of "recommend songs like these songs" is what Pandora is supposed to do.

Create a free account and create a station based on these six songs, and see if you like what you get...

Gillian Welch, Golden Smog, maybe early Steve Earle. Also Adrienne Young.

seconding Will Oldham/Palace/Bonnie 'Prince' Billy.
If you like Son Volt, try Uncle Tupelo, especially "March 16-20, 1992."
and if you like Sun Kil Moon/Red House Painters, Mark Kozelek's solo work.
Also ...
Lambchop, American Music Club, Band of Horses, Calexico, Neko Case, Cat Power, Jim White, Jayhawks.

Would SMOG fit in there? I've got an old Damien Jurado lp that is similar to the stuff listed so far.

Seconding Mark Kozelek's solo work.

Adding Great Lake Swimmers, Hem (specifically the "Rabbit Songs" CD), and "Nether Lands" by Dan Fogelberg.

A few from a quick glance at my own iTunes library...
Ryan Adams - "My Winding Wheel" from Heartbreaker, "Hallelujah" from Demolition. (And as frontman of Whiskeytown, "Jacksonville Skyline" from Pneumonia.)
Decemberists - "All Arise" from The King is Dead, "As I Rise" from Her Majesty.
Shins - "Gone for Good" from Chutes Too Narrow.
Wilco - probably most of A.M., and half of Being There: "Pick Up the Change" and "Forget the Flowers", for example.
Okkervil River - "Calling and Not Calling my Ex"; from The Stand-Ins.
