What font is this?

Please help me identify the font used in this image.
At first glance and to my admittedly untrained eye, I figured it was Helvetica Bold, so I tried to copy it in Photoshop. I couldn't quite get it to match, but perhaps I was just using the wrong size or the wrong kerning or something?
Next, I tried checking with WhatFontIs.com and one of the guesses given was Helvetica Neue--I have Helvetica Neue LT Com, is that the same thing?
(I don't know which I'm asking for really, whether it's a font or a typeface. From what I understand, the two terms are technically not interchangeable, so I'm sorry if I made someone's eye twitch from the misuse. Mea culpa!)

Okay, so I removed - the velvet underground from the image in case it was confusing the identity-this-font sites since it's in a thinner font/typeface. Top guess was Europa Gro Nr2 SH-Bol. Hmm, it does look like it. Too bad it's commercial.
Any recommendations of similar-looking fonts that are free to use?

It's 26 dollars! Buy it!
The fonts that WhatTheFont returns are similar. They also have a good forum where you can ask people who know their fonts for advice.

It's Helvetica Neue Heavy.
I just set the quote in Illustrator and it matches-up perfectly.

There's a ton of custom kerning involved, of course.
