Keep calm and carry on

Ok - everybody sit down - there's an app store outage. Who's panicking yet?

I'm seeing reports on Twitter from Japan and the UK, and it's here too. Seems to have lasted at least 10 mins so far.

No doubt it will be fixed by the time I finish typing this, but my question is:

Who feels uneasy or unsettled by this?

It's not that I don't understand why it might cause this kind of feeling, it's just that I'm a little surprised at the speed and depth which this seems to have penetrated into my "things the universe cannot continue without" subset.

Thoughts anyone?

I personally feel a mortal fear when I even consider the idea of not being able to buy an app right at the very moment the notion takes me. Do you have any idea how terrifying it is, thinking I might have to wait a few hours? What if I want to play Whack-a-Mole on my iPhone now!? I can't wait damnit!

That's how I wanted to reply to this. With sarcasm. Why would anyone be uneasy by the App Store going down? Hmm, just looked at previous questions you've asked. I think you might be creating your anxiety. Think of times when you haven't checked the app store in a few hours and also didn't die during that time. Checking the App Store is not required for your continued wellbeing. Relax.

This is not what AskMe is for.

Remember the days when you were on dial-up and the internet conked out every time you were sending a job application, or a dissertation chapter to your supervisor, or you pressed "order" for a 200-bucks item. Those were the days we panicked. What's an "app"?

Yeah, this is not an AskMe question.

Response by poster: I apologise if the question is in an inappropriate forum, and as such, I withdraw it.

I don't appreciate the sarcasm, which clearly misses the hyperbole I thought was bleedingly obvious, and indeed the point of the question.

What I intended to convey was as follows:

"People seem to be overreacting to a fairly minor technical outage, which those of us who grew up manually setting the s-registers in our 2400 baud modems would regard as trivial (and somewhat amusing).

However, given the penetration of iOS into popular culture, and the level of invovement the general public appear to have developed with that particular o/s and associated devices, it is perhaps understandable that people might be feeling uneasy by the sudden unavailability of a service that has hithero been ubiquitous.

I am surprised to have had any emotional response whatsoever, albeit a momentary feeling of 'wow, that's a bit unusual. People in different countries are also mentioning it. It must be a central server issue'.

Has anyone else had any similar response and are they similarly surprised?"

I don't give a flying f** about whether the app store is up, down, or sideways.

I am not anxious.

I do not require medication, counselling, handholding, relaxation, cups of tea, sympathy, or indeed anything much beyond a simple "couldn't care less" or "yeah, I felt a bit that way.

To the extent the question contemplates a survey-like respose, I concede it may well be inappropriate on ask.

I will endeavour to remember that there are a significant number of very literal readers next time I post.

Best answer: It was giving me fits yesterday as some on-deadline magazine ads were completely untestable, thanks to Adobe's ridiculous Digital Publishing Suite workflow. Also, chatfilter. Sorry, dude.

We don't know you and can't hear the bleedingly obvious sarcasm in your typing. Don't ask AMIRITE questions and then get defensive when people tell you you're not adhering to the guidelines.

A single sentence mentioning that you were perhaps being a little sarcastic might have helped people realise you werent actually worried the app store was down. It wasn't obvious in the slightest.

And nope, not bothered about the app store either.

Best answer: Sarcasm doesn't work well on Ask.me. It's really intended to be straightforward. You have(had?) the makings of a front page post. App store is down, trending topic on social media, some people actually panicking. If you do a good job of writing and linking, there will be good, interesting discussion.

You didn't really have a question that needed an answer, so I'm surprised this stayed up.
