I have ten thousand email addresses. Who may I spam?

a) family and friends
b) facebook and gplus friends
c) people I communicated with via email, even only once
d) 2000 email addresses harvested from a ridiculously open directory on a website narrowly targeted at my niche market
e) email addresses collected from businesses and organizations in my niche market via web surfing
f) email addresses from people writing their names down on paper at public gatherings
g) email addresses online surveys (LimeSurvey, SurveyMonkey) about my business idea
h) email addresses from Metafilter (4 people - narrowly targeted -- Canadian plus some other qualifiers) - same goes for other websites.

I have been collecting these email addressees since 1995. The addresses are nawworly targeted.

Spamming works like flossing. You only have to floss the teeth you want to keep, and you only get to spam friends you intend to lose.

Also, wtf.

What country/state are you in? Where are the people who own these email addresses?

Best answer: If you have 10,000 email addresses that you've been collecting since 1995, you're going to find that 9,000 are no longer active.

In other news, the Golden Rule takes another dip in the popularity charts.

Best answer: I'm pretty sure it's "whom." as in, "Whom may I spam?"

What do we think, fellow pedants?

Oh, also: the answer is no one. Just, don't. Please.

From wikipedia:

The opposite of "spam," email which one wants, is called "ham" ....

So. You may "spam" anyone you like. But be aware that nobody wants it. As such, you'll burn a lot of bridges.

See also, legality issues. Of course, IANAL, this is not legal advice.

What do you want to achieve?

Is this a stunt post or something? Because I can't imagine why anyone would think it's okay to ask who you can spam. Let alone who you can spam going back SIXTEEN YEARS.

Response by poster: Ok, wow, harsh initial response. This is not penis spam, this is a legit brick and mortars concept. At the very least, friends and family would be happy to hear about this idea.

Best answer: By the look of this (and presuming you are in Canada) you may spam any of these people who have explicitly given you permission.

Then send it to friends and family. I assume you don't have 10,000 of those.

No one.

Next question?

Seems like a great idea.
1. Set up an account for a user called "MyHomeBiz".
2. Tell people you have 10,000 email addresses.
3. Wait for the Mefimail.
4. ??????
5. Profit!

Response by poster: The name is legit. It's a sockpuppet account.

I have the funny feeling you might not have any friends left if you did this.

Best answer: Upon failure to review:

This is not penis spam, this is a legit brick and mortars concept.

Doesn't matter what kind of concept it is. If it is unwanted and unasked-for email, it's spam. It's junk mail.

At the very least, friends and family would be happy to hear about this idea.

You know, my aunt thought i'd be happy getting that super-text-heavy Tea Party-esque email about Hillary Clinton that one time, but...no.

Okay, I'll play nice. Study your ISP to see what the rules are about mass-email (lots of them have a cutoff point of how many people you can cc on a single email, and if you exceed it they'll block your email from being sent). Then cull your list accordingly.

That...makes it even less legit, I'd say. If this is so legitimate, why don't you want it connected to your username?

All right, I'm gonna stop feeding the trolls now. Promise.
