examples of song lyrics used in visual artworks?
May 23, 2011 3:55 AM

Trying to find examples of musical lyrics being used in visual artworks (painting, print, film, etc).

I immediately thought of Peter Blake to see if he'd done anything along those lines, but the pickings are slim - perhaps because of the copyright problems involved. So, not looking for a discussion of the copright problems, just those few examples where someone may have gone ahead anyway.

Also of interest - any 'visual reenactments' of lyrics that aren't what we ancients used to refer to as music videos. Thank you.

It's a good start - would like more, too. Thank you.

There's a site called My Favorite Typo' Music where people create typographically based art pieces using song lyrics. Here's an example by the site owner. This one is cool too.

One more and then I'll stop hogging the thread: Music Philosophy is a weekly graphic/typographic interpretation of philosophical song quotes.

Two music videos come to mind: Cee-Lo Green's "Fuck You" and Jonathan Coulton's "Shopvac." (Not visual re-enactments but animations of the lyrics.)

One music video comes to mind, which is the official video to Prince's Sing O' The Times. Video is simply scrolling lyrics presented in different typography over a minimalist background. I consider it a piece of multi-media art, but then I'm a big Font / Typography geek, and YMMV.

I'm very grateful to those of you who have thought about the video examples.

I'm hoping that there might be a few more paintings, prints, or maybe comics or something, though.
