HTML for Web page counter?

I want to include a counter on my website. I don't want to use a "free" counter that includes links or advertisement on my site. I'd rather just write the code in myself for a simple, small, black-and-white counter. Can anyone help me?

Also, just so you're clear, a counter can't be done with just HTML. You're going to require some sort of server-side scripting to make it happen.

PHP counters can be found here, while scripts written in Perl can be found here. Either resource should offer you what you're looking for.

I'mn using Statcounter for two of my blogs. You can hide the counter and no ads. But when viewing your stats you will get popups. IMHO very good reports: visitor path, duration, search engine wars.

I'm using Statcounter as well and had no idea that you got popups. I guess Firefox takes care of them.
