My mother in law is convinced there was a novel published in the last twenty years featuring a nun as the protagonist. It was written by a man and won at least one award. Any ideas?
Also here's a link describing it, if that's helpful! Not sure what awards it won, but it was quite acclaimed critically.

Robert Hellenga's The Sixteen Pleasures almost fits said bill - written by a man with a female protagonist who spends much time in a convent with nuns, and I believe it won some awards.

Could she be thinking of Boris Akunin's Sister Pelagia series?

Don't know if it won anything, but there was also Ron Hansen's "Mariette in Ecstasy".

"Mariette in Ecstasy" was my first thought too. I can't find any awards that it won but Ron Hansen's other books have been finalists for the National Book Award and PEN/Faulkner Award.

In This House of Brede by Rumer Godden, published in 1969. I don't see any awards but it was made in to a TV movie starring Diana Rigg.

Radiolab talked once about a recent book about a nun in a convent who had visions due to a tumor. It was fiction and by a man. Sorry I don't know the title offhand.

Agnes of God was a play (before it was a movie), but it was written by a man.
