100+ dice
March 11, 2011 3:27 PM

Are there any fun games that are played with a lot of dice at one time?

Say, 100 dice or more? I'm not thinking of something like Dicecapades; rather, something that has rules that are related to the logic of the roll, with standard six-sided dice.

It doesn't have to be officially marketed game. If nothing exists, I'd be curious to find out how to make a fun game out of 100 (or more) dice. Not looking for brainstorming ideas necessarily (although if you have them, I'd be interested), as much as I'm looking for general resources that discuss what goes into making a fun dice game.

There is a game called Dudo a friend of mine taught me, where each players get a cup and five dice. Though I'm not sure it would quite scale to the level of 100 dice.

Check out Dix Mille (Another rule set if it helps)

It's super addictive and fun, for six dice, and I'm sure you could figure out a way to make it scale higher since the rules are so simple. I've played this game with every sort of character imaginable, from fall down drunk shrimpers to effete college professors.

It's a hell of a lot of fun.

You could try to create something approximating an offline version of Dice Wars.

If you're interested in a game with tons of rules about how you roll those dice, you could play Warhammer 40k. My Ork Sluggas were routinely rolling a hundred dice on the charge. I ended up buying a bulk set of 200 16mm dice.

I think counting 100 die rolls would be brutal.

Axis and Allies is fun for some people, and it does involve a ton of dice, especially later in the game. In a battle, each attacking and each defending unit gets a die roll per turn. So, if you bring 22 tanks and 5 bombers into an opponent's territory containing 3 fighters, an anti-aircraft unit, and 35 infantry, that's potential for up to 66 die rolls per turn there.

I have an unpublished game I call Rollcage that is based around 25 six-sided dice, but the gameplay is primarily about arranging them, not rolling them. Also it's only been playtested a couple of times and still has a few rough edges.

The old Star Wars RPG system used your skill level as the number of dice you rolled to accomplish difficulties. A really powerful character might have more than 20 six-siders to roll to hit. Get a group of really powerful characters and you're spending almost the entire playtime counting d-sixes. It was absolutely atrocious and caused games to grind to a halt worse than any other RPG I've ever played.

It's nowhere near 100, but the most dice I've ever rolled in a game is To Court the King. You earn cards representing different royalty by rolling certain patterns of dice (all even, total greater than 20, 5 of a kind, straights, etc). The cards then give you various powers over the dice — you might get to add more dice, move pips between dice, reroll dice, etc. By the end of the game, I believe you can get up to 12 dice.

I have a hard time imagining playing a game with 100 dice and not having it be extremely hard to find a large enough space, tedious to play, and involving too much arithmetic. But then, I don't design games, I just play them.

Came here to mention Warhammer 40k, which can indeed result in rolling double-handfuls of dice and giggling happily while your opponent goes 'Oh crap, why'd I let them get off a charge?' Although I must advocate for the glory of the Imperium, not those dirty greenskin scum. Kill the mutant, burn the heretic, purge the unclean, for the glory of the God-Emperor of Mankind.

(I play Dark Angels. Deathwing FTW.)

Mutation, also unpublished, uses about 100 dice with 5 players [the catch being you'd need ~20 dice of 5 different colors instead of 100 of one color]. I've played it a few times and enjoyed it, and the logic comes with placing [and possibly removing] a die after you've rolled two of them.

Combat-heavy Shadowrun.

At least, 2nd ed.

If you want to roll a lot of dice, in a real game, Titan's your game. I'm not sure if it ever hits 100 at a time, but it does have a situation where you'd need to roll 90 dice (five serpents on a titan).

I'm presuming you're thinking of a large-scale dice game that can be played by a lot of people at the same time.

I give you tournament Yahtzee. Start with x (the number of players), split up into groups of 4 players. Play 1-2 rounds, with the winners (plus wild cards as needed) to fill out a 8, 12, or 16 person second-round. Go from there to find a winner.

Liras dice and Bunco both use a ton of dice, and are very fun.
