Costume ideas for the Australian Discworld Convention 2011 Nullus Anxietas 3 ....
I am planning on attending the Australian Discworld Convention 2011 Nullus Anxietas 3 and I need costume ideas. I am female, fairly average size, and I have short brown hair. I have plenty of time till the convention and I can sew.
Now obviously there are some easy costumes but I want somthing a bit different, (I mean there will be plenty of nanny's and granny's), so the more complicated and obscure the better. So hivemind, hit with your best Discworld costume ideas.

Best answer: Probably way over budget but... get some green scleral lenses and wear them with your normal clothes, then see how long it takes people to work out who you are.

what about abstractly referring to a fav character or book. for example lots of watches for the time one (obviously my discworld knowledge letting me down here - the exact details escape me).

Well, if you want to really meta, you could go as Molly Clapper, the fictional heroine of The Amorous Adventures of Molly Clapper.
Or, if you want to go really, really meta, you could go as Preserved J. Nightingale, the roundworld author of Watches Abroad.

Since it's an Australian Con, and Nullus Anxietas loosely translates as "no wurries" (sic), how about the four-legged duck?

Best answer: Make yourself a beautiful stola (or toga and tunic, as that might be more recognizable to modern eyes, even if period/gender inappropriate), and carry around a drawer full of badly matched kitchen utensils (including at least one oversized ladle).

(Yay, Discworld costumes! I've been Vimes and AE Pessimal in the past.)
If you want complicated (costume + makeup + props), go as Igorina from Monstrous Regiment.

Extremelia Mume? She would be reasonably complicated and obscure. Particularly in her well off golden spatula phase.

Best answer: Suppose you are too tall to wear a beard and go as a dwarf?
I think in-general if you want complicated you will have to go as a different species,
obscure, that's easy, (Jocasta Wiggs for example) but obscure and complicated/involved ...
so other possibilities:
Doreen Winkings might be fun, you could totally camp it up for her. Or, Myria LeJean post "breakdown" in her gaudy stage. Queen Ynci? Conina?

I suppose you could sew yourself a dog/wolf suit and go as Angua...
Get a grey hooded robe and go as an Auditor...
or be completely boring and dress normally and go as Susan.

If granny is out.. How about Lilith?
I must admit I would also be partial to a Glenda with a crab bucket
Or maybe a jobbing tooth fairy?

You know the Seamstresses' Guild has nothing to do with sewing, right? I mean, you could dress as a seamstress but that might send out the wrong message to other convention goers.
Queen Molly, head of the Beggars' Guild? If you want to be in character you can go around asking people if they have a spare fifty for some caviar, or a penthouse suite for the night.
