Pewned?
January 20, 2011 5:36 PM

How, if at all, does one pronounce "pwned"?

Is there a correct pronunciation of pwned? One of my work chums once used it in a sentence, pronouncing it something like PEW-ned. I always thought pwned was meant only to be read, not spoken. Or, pronounced something like "pawned."

What's the consensus on this?

I heard someone say "poned", as in "rhymes with boned".

Every time I've heard it it's been like "owned" with a p in front.

Ditto what they said. I've always heard it pronounced "poned."

I always have thought of it like "owned" with a "d," so powned. It always makes me think of corn pone. I am far from a definitive sample, however.

It originates from a misspelling of 'owned,' so I've always pronounced it as p+owned, thus "poned" as other answers have suggested.

Definitely not! It is meant to be thrown in the face of the n00bs you have pwned, preferably with a volley of expletives and/or grenades.

And yes, "powned" as in "owned."

"poned".

Without a vowel between the p and the w, it would just be a muffled "pnnd" sound. Or perhaps "pwuned" with an understood vowel after the n. Neither of which would be recognizable to the listener.

Some pedants may argue it should be pronounced "owned", just like owned is, but then the listener would miss the allusion.

pwned like phoned like boned like moaned.

As an aside, lol like roll like hole like goal.

"pwned" rhymes with "phoned" but "lol" rhymes with "ball" in my lectionary.

In this clip, you can hear HuskyStarcraft pronounce the word in rap form (shortly after the 2min mark):

I have never heard anyone ever say "LOL" like "roll." LAWL.

"Poned", rhymes with "owned" since that's its etymology. I actually spell it "poned" as well, but that's neither here nor there.

Stick a "p" in front of "owned" -- that's how it's pronounced. It's a typo that turned into gamer talk that turned into internet geek talk, and yes, it can and should be pronounced out loud.

That is how we pronounce both pnwed and lol in our household. Our pronunciation of 'lol' stems from 'lulz'.

I was roommates with a top instance mage and a top PvP rogue on one of the larger WoW servers. It's "poned." Last I knew it had become pwn which would be pronounced the same.

And lol is "loal?" What? No. I've never heard that and "lawl" is common usage now.

I like to give it the proper Welsh pronunciation, so it comes out "pooned".

If it weren't for my amazing holy paladin, my guy's mage would have been "powned" in that battleground tonight.

Lawl, newb.

If it wasn't "powned" it wouldn't make sense to have pwnies.

Well, Strong Bad pronounces it "Pah-owned," and I doubt we'll get a more definitive answer than that.

"pownered" is an acceptable variant where I live.

I say "owned" and "ell oh ell," but I also have an almost irresistible urge to say "URL" like "earl,' and I take pride in being able to recite Slashdot's full address at top speed, so.

In my head, I read it as "pee-owned".

Pawnd. Like owned, and porn, and pawn combined. Those last two don't really sound the same with an American accent, though.

Lol, like poll.

Pure Pwnage is pronounced "Pure Ownage".

^ The word "pwnage" can be pronounced several different ways. The show's creators pronounce it "ownage". Jeremy justifies this pronunciation with the following statements: "When people say /ˈpoʊn/, they sound like a complete *****, and I'm not cool with being a *****, so I pronounce it /ˈoʊn/." "'Pwn' was originally a typo of 'own', because the 'P' is near the 'O' on the keyboard. The person is still trying to say 'own'." [TeamSpeak chat, December 13, 2005].

No matter what slanderous words he sullies his comments with, the fact stands: the QWERTY keyboard places o beside p, and the person still meant "owned"

Forever powned.

I'm interested in the placement of your GG, however — pre or post pwnage? Myself, I favor a somewhat subvocalized terminal GG, a la "PONED! (guh-guh)" but ymmv.

In my mind it sounds like 'peened' and conjures the image of someone getting hit with a tiny hammer.

But please do the world a favor and never ever say 'pwned' out loud.

Well, there's this, which captures a particular segment of Counter Strike players pretty well and says "pooned," but I'm with everyone else that says "powned."

I know perfectly well that logically it should be 'poned' but that doesn't stop me pronouncing it 'pawned' inside my head.

I usually hear "pwned" pronounced "powned" (rhymes with "phoned"), as others have said. Sometimes people always pronounce it "owned", as if their brain ignored the apparent type and thought the "p" actually was an "o".

A few years back I also heard this pronounced "pawned" from time to time, and sometimes written "pwnd" with no vowels. I haven't heard this in the last 3-4 years though.
