Web software for voting up/down ideas
October 19, 2010 11:47 PM

I want to create a web page that colleagues can use to create short improvement ideas and then have those ideas voted up or down by other users. Is there a free software package that I can install on a server that would enable us to do this? Bonus points for open source.

We used uservoice for this at work for a while, it's hosted though as far as I know.

Google Moderator might be another option.

Hmm... Not sure what that extra "+SQL" is doing there ... Mods, please delete?

Yes, have a look at Google Moderator and see if it meets your needs. It's a weird half-baked kind of service that's limited in unexpected ways, but if it does what you need it to, then it may be just the ticket.

In addition to uservoice and Google Moderator, see also IdeaTorrent.

Seeing IdeaTorrent was what got be interested in the idea, but unfortunately they don't support MySQL.

WordPress with the tdo-mini-forms plugin (for submitting ideas) and the vote it up plugin will do the job.

The MIT Idea Bank (sorry you probably won't be able to log in so maybe it's pointless to link...) did almost this exact thing using Drupal and some voting plug-ins.
