Help me find a psychiatrist

How do I find a psychiatrist that specializes in adult ADHD? I'm in Albuquerque, NM.

I've recently realized that I almost definitely have ADHD. It runs in my family, and I've got all the traits that led my dad and siblings to seek treatment. So, I'd like to see a psychiatrist about getting formally tested and working out something to help me pay my bills every month and keep the kitchen clean. (And hey! If the psychiatrist recommends something other than ADHD as being the cause, that's cool, too! I'm not going in with an agenda, except to get help.) I know I should see someone who specializes, but I have no idea how to do that. A google search just pulled up lots of scammy looking sites that didn't really lead me to anything useful. My family is in another state, so I can't just visit their doctor! So, do you know anyone I should visit? My primary care doc only has referrals for psychiatrists in general, not someone who specializes. Alternately, is there a good source on the web that I'm overlooking? I read back through all the questions tagged ADD or ADHD and didn't see any specific directories linked, but maybe I missed something. (Insurance, network, etc. doesn't matter. I've got to fend for myself anyway, so I'd just like to see someone as soon as possible.)

Thank you for your help!

Do you have an HMO, or do the recommended psychiatrists have a group practice? Typically, if you contact the group, they will know who does what. They may have their specialties listed on their bio pages on the web, if they have them.

You will probably want to see a neuropsychiatrist for testing and possibly continued checkups, though I think they're mainly used in this case for the diagnosis. A good general psychiatrist will be able to provide you with more specific medication recommendations and instructions for how to find the right dose of the right medication; you would probably see them once every six months or so once you've gotten a good cocktail going. They will work with your PCP and your therapist, if you have one.

Psychology Today's website has a great therapist-finder with all sorts of filters (insurance, treatment, zipcode, etc.)
