Band I saw in SXSW in 2005

Band identification--SW US circa 2005

This a long shot, I know. I went to SXSW in 2005 and saw a really, truly outstanding band. I know it was a long time ago, but I think about this group fairly often and want to find out who they were, and what else they've done.

They played at a tiny venue at a really strange time in the middle of the day (2 pm-ish) but these guys were awesome, very tight musicians with bright, clever lyrics. The lead singer had a great, seemingly professional trained voice. They were probably the best band I saw at SXSW. They were young--18 to 21 years old at the time. The band was all male and white, four or five musicians: guitar, lead singer, drums, bass. The lead singer did not play an instrument.

I'm not entirely sure if these guys were even part of the "official" SXSW line up, or just playing at a club. The reason I was even there is because they played before another band, called Single Frame Ashtray (a friend of a friend was a member. I e-mailed the member I know and asked if he knew who the other band was, but I didn't hear back from him).

I don't know much about music genres, but I would describe their style as a sort of combination of Museish. My husband agrees, and says they're like Muse meets Gogol Bordello. I recall the lead singer saying that they were from somewhere in Arizona--Phoenix, I think.

And here's the detail that might actually lead somewhere: they all wore white butcher's aprons over their boxer shorts and nothing else.

Best answer: Looking in the Showlist Austin archives for March 2005, here are some possibilities based off of show lineups:

Tues 3/15
Drums & Tuba, Single Frame at The Parish

Technically this is the night before SXSW starts so I don't think this is it.

Fri 3/18
Super! Alright!/KVRX day show with
Dead Whale Tide (5pm), Single Frame (4pm), The Mean Reds (3pm), This Microwave World (2pm), Peelander-Z (1pm), The Octopus Project (noon), music videos from Super! Alright! at Elysium (free beer and food)

Sat 3/19
The Panthers (5pm), Bad Wizard (4:15pm), The Sights (3:30pm), The Sword (2:45pm), Turing Machine (2pm), The Blue Van (1:15pm), Single Frame (12:30pm) at Flamingo Cantina

From this listing, it looks like it was the Mean Reds since Single Frame played first on Saturday's show. And their MySpace says they're form Tuscon.

It says here that SFA (then SF) played at 1 AM, or was at least supposed to. Is it possible that was another year? I suppose they could also have played an unofficial gig, like you said.

Best answer: "Other than that, the only thing that made me say holy shit at a show, was when I saw The Mean Reds, and they came out naked, only wearing like cooking aprons. haha." link

Response by poster: Oh, I should have posted this later in the day, when I was not at work, so I could listen to the songs! But Mean Reds is really sounding like the band. Thank you! I'd googled my heart out trying to find this band, and figured that the answer to this question would depend on someone else who actually saw the band; I'm seriously impressed with these search engine skills.

Muse meets Gogol Bordello is a dead on description of The Mean Reds, based on what I heard on their MySpace.
