Will I be able to leave Morocco?
June 17, 2010 9:21 AM

I put MS instead of MR on a plane ticket I ordered for a male friend. Is this a big deal?

I should also probably note that flight is Royal Air Morocco from Marrakech, Morocco to Lisbon, Portugal. It also has his US passport numbers on the ticket. Will he (and I, since I'm with him) run into issues?

Also, our names were reversed, ie, last_name first_name instead of first_name last_name. Calling the help line was not very helpful, but they did tell me name issue would not be a problem.

Anyone have information to the contrary?

Here's a datapoint -- I traveled on an airline ticket that listed me as "Dr Mr Peter Petridish" and it wasn't a problem for a USA <> Europe flight. I was gently questioned about it (only in the US) by one or two security people, but I explained the situation and it was fine.

In general, as long as you explain the issue at the checkin desk, you should be alright, they'll just amend it and print a new ticket. Don't check in online though, and make sure the tickets match the names in your passports before you get to security.

I've flown on tickets with both flipped names and incorrect genders and as long as the passport gives your definitive gender and the names on the ticket match the passport names in some order, you'll be fine.

Security holds are put on people at airports and boarding barred when the ticket doesn't match the booker's name: ie, US records say your passport was issued to Wayne Burges but you bought a ticket for Scott Thomas. But if you bought a ticket for Scott Thomas and the passport indicates it was issued to Thomas Scott, the humans checking these things can usually work out that it was a booking error and not a terrorist plot.

You can, however, request the airline re-issue your tickets with the correct names if you have a type-A personality. They may as well do the gender while they're there but that's really not important.

Me too. I have flown across the world with the wrong gender and every permutation of my first, middle, and last name on the ticket. Sometimes out of order AND misspelled. I've never had anyone ask me about it.

Nthing no worries. My frequent flyer program has the wrong gender on file and refuses to change it without requiring me to file for a new credit card number or some nonsense. I've flown a few times with it incorrect on the ticket and haven't encountered any problems.

When I went to Morocco a few years ago, people frequently misunderstood my name: taking the middle name as the first, reading "Mars" as some kind of title like "Mr" or "Mrs", swapping last and first names, whatever. I was asked for clarification a couple of times, but it was never an actual problem.

Given the number of drop down menues that like to change what you entered when you scroll down, I have to assume that they have seen this kind of issue more times than you can imagine. Easy solution is to get there a bit early, and if they balk at fixing it when you check-in, you can go back to check in if security doesn't want to let you onto the plane.

Thanks all! Not worried anymore... well, about the plane tickets at least. The voyage itself...

I sometimes fly on tickets with Dr, sometimes Ms, sometimes Mrs, and sometimes it inexplicably becomes Mr. I've never had any problems just explaining it at the desk.

If questioned about it at security, just ask them if they want to "check" and then grin maniacally. You'll be fine.
