Are the Nationals Hot Stuff this year?
May 17, 2010 3:14 PM

I'm planning on going to a Washington Nationals game on Thursday with a group of about 10 people. Should we buy tickets ahead of time? We just want the cheap $10 seats.

I went last year, and it wasn't crowded at all, but I know nothing about baseball, so I don't know if they're better or more popular this year, and with a group, I'm not sure what's best. If you buy tickets online, can you choose your seats or just the section? We'd all like to sit together. Thanks.

As with all MLB teams, when you purchase online you can do so by price or section and just order as many tickets as you like and they will be grouped together. However, if you have the option of going to the box office and purchasing the tickets in person, do so and avoid the $24 ticket booking fee plus any crap waiting-around-at-Will-Call before the game.

FWIW, Thursday they're giving away a kinda lame looking hat to the first 15,000 people and they're playing the Mets, who, god-love-'em are having a freakin' mess of a year and fans are dropping like flies.

That said, don't worry about not being able to get tickets on Thursday.

Unless the Phillies are in town, I'd guess you don't have to bother. Seriously, when the Phillies and Nationals play in Washington there seem to be as many Phillies fans as Nationals fans. And there's still nobody there.

(Even when the Phillies are in town, it still looks deserted there.)

I have never had trouble buying tickets at the gate.

If you buy them online, though, there are little machines to the left of the main gates, around the corner from the ticket booths. I was very impressed the first time I used them because you don't have to press any buttons. You just slide your card through and it prints the tickets. Very neat, and uncharacteristically good design for that sort of thing!

I did this with a group of 11 coworkers two weeks ago (Nats vs. Braves). It was totally fine, fairly big crowd but that stadium is huge.

Avoid getting your tickets from the electronic kiosks, because you can only get 10 at a time and you can't specify where you want your seats. Our #11 was out of luck but luckily there was plenty of extra space in our section.

And the Nats scored 2 home runs! AND they won! And I got to eat Ben's Chili Bowl. What a great way to spend my second-to-last night in DC...

Yes, I'd say the Nats are definitely better this year. And they're playing the Mets, who usually draw a pretty good crowd (despite their current freefall). The weather looks like it'll be nice, too.

But you can definitely still get tickets, even in a group. The $10-$15 seats usually have plenty open, and you should be able to get them online just fine. But if you just wait 'til the game, I'd recommend going over to home plate gate to get them--lines are far shorter. (Just don't tell anyone I said that.)

P.S.--You might as well get the good beer while you're there. It's the same price as bad beer. Have fun!

And once you have those cheap seat tickets, you can pretty much just go sit wherever you see a group of 10 (or whatever) seats together. The ushers really don't care, so long as you're not squeezing all the way up (and even then, well, they don't really care).

Not at the beer stands I went to. Only at the Bullpen (the bar outside the stadium, which I totally recommend if it's a nice day).
