I thoroughly recommend this book whose title and author I have quite forgotten

Please help me identify this half-remembered novel: boy genius (Ludo/Ludovic?) is educated by his single mother, who judges quite correctly that he's far too bright to go to school, and who refuses to tell him who his father is because he's the result of a one night stand with somebody she thinks is utterly beneath both of them because he's in advertising or TV or something of that ilk.

Helen DeWitt's blog, paper pools, is really good. At least it is if you liked the tone of her novel.
