Fantasy book remembering filter: Naked guy on a river bank
Ok - so read a book in 1992 (paperback with a white cover)- think the publishing date was sometime in the late 1960s. In the opening of the book, after the protagonist's death (or something similar) he awakes on a river bank. The book chronicles his journey along the river bank, him trying to figure out where he is, etc. Think somewhere along the way he befriends/battles a fantasy-esque creature.
Also think this book is part of a trilogy or other series.
Know some of these elements describe a lot of stuff out there, but was hoping the hive mind could help jog this battered memory and identify the author or title.

Gotta be Philip Jose Farmer's To Your Scattered Bodies Go.

Strictly speaking, the Riverworld books are science fiction, not fantasy.

Unlikely, perhaps, but Fahrenheit 451? The protagonist flees a mechanical hound, swims a river... memory is fuzzy...

Thanks for reminding me of this series. I read the first book (or two?) because of the cool title and dropped off afterward.
