LOST

Son in Ireland has broken down in a car from Cong to Shannon airport. He has a US cell phone and cannot figure out how to call for police or road aid, Can anyone explain how he would dial for help? THANKS!

You need the European emergency telephone number, 112. Wiki says 999 might also work in Ireland.

Thanks,This is great. Does they dial 999 or need to enter country code numbers. ALso I need to add he has minimal battery life.

112 should work everywhere, without a country code.

Thanks so much! They were totally lost and had no idea how to call within the country.

He needs to call like he is in the US. e.g. 011 353 + #
so try 011 353 999

Mefites have saved the day. They were able to call for road aid and are back on their way to the airport. Sincere thanks to all who took a moment to help.

is 112/999 REALLY the best number to call in these situations? Those are for emergency services...emergency as in life threatening.

This is not true. His phone will not be connected to a US exchange, but an Irish one. He only needs to dial normally, but using an Irish emergency number (112 or 999).

However his most appropriate number is the helpline provided in his hire car information package- 999/112 are, as pointed out, for emergencies, not breakdown. Almost all reputable hire/rental car companies will have some kind of assistance package.
