Can a guy get double-meta for a minute?
December 29, 2009 3:50 AM

For me, nothing beats an AskMeFi question like the "How are you?" one from this morning. I love reading questions that elicit dozens of answers, and most importantly, a big proportion of responses that challenge the basic premise of the question, rather than answering it directly. I think I just enjoy reading a string of answers that the original asker didn't expect (although should have, but for the lack of some social/physical/fashion knowledge). I remember a similar question about how best to wear a fedora (although I can't seem to find it now) - are there other good examples?

Not to challenge your basic premise, but shouldn't this go on MeTa?

I think if you're going to go double-meta, you're supposed to go to MetaTalk.

Oh, and the fedora guy? That's this one. Somehow I always imagine him being the same person as banjodude.

While challenging the premise may be entertaining in a shallow way, I think you'll find deeper satisfaction in questions whose answers are precise and on-point. There's beauty and elegance in a job done well, and of course those are the kinds of questions that you'll appreciate more as an asker.
