What's your favorite Christmas-related fact(oid)?

Could be trivia, history, mythology, something about how it's celebrated in different cultures. Anything funny or interesting, really - for example, the fact that so many popular Christmas songs were written by Jews.

Modern santa was pretty much imagined by Coca-Cola for an ad campaign? I figure most people know that but it's still kind of interesting.

Again with the Jewish conspiracies! I keed, I keed.

I expect you've seen the Sinterklaas/Zwarte Piet/Krampus thread on the Blue today? Krampus, in particular, is pretty astounding to most non-German/Austrian folks.

The IP rights to Rudolph used to be owned by his initial creator, Montgomery Ward.

Also Rudolph is a girl; male reindeer shed their antlers in the winter.

Seconding Krampus. The fact that this has anything to do with Christmas is awesome.

The Biblical tradition holds that the reason Joseph and Mary were traveling to Bethlehem was to enroll in the census of Quirinius. It also has them fleeing Herod's Massacre of the Innocents shortly after Jesus' birth, because Herod wanted to kill the future King of the Jews.

Quirinius's census was in 6 AD. King Herod died in 4 BC.
