What is the best national express bus stop to go to in order to end up near Clerkenwell, London?
It depends where exactly in Clerkenwell you want to go and where you are getting the coach from. The nearest designated bus stop is either Blackfriars (south of Clerkenwell) or Euston (north west of Clerkenwell), or, slightly further away, Liverpool St and Aldgate.
Bear in mind that it is dead easy to get the Circle or Metropolitan line from Euston Square or King's Cross to Farringdon (i.e. Clerkenwell) or from Aldgate or Liverpool Street or (with a single stop change) Bank to Farringdon. Even Victoria is 20-25 minutes to Farringdon.
Blackfriars, Euston and Aldgate are all an easy taxi ride from Clerkenwell. On the tube map (pdf) you can see how well connected Farringdon is - the options I'vve given you are all within 10 minutes on the tube. Alternatively, you can also see a map of buses going to Farringdon here (pdf).

Blackfriars would have been the best option but it turns out it is all mooted by the fact that I couldn't do a same day return. Train it will be. Thanks for the help anyway.
