Songfilter: Not the usual Tennessee Waltz
February 4, 2009 2:35 PM
I heard a tune on the local alternative radio station the other day that I can't find. It was song all fast and hoarse and the phrases I remember are "a song about the boy who broke your heart" and "Tennessee waltz." I looked up the lyrics to the classic "Tennessee Waltz" and its not sounding similiar to me. It was kinda punkish and the style reminded me of the Meat Puppets a bit. Any ideas, oh brilliant answerers?
My google skills have failed me, and that so rarely happens. Luckily, it was just the impetus I needed to finally sign up for an account on here.

Could it be a cover of Jesse Winchester's Brand New Tennessee Waltz

Was it "Nights Like These" by Lucero? (track 3 on the linked player).
The lyrics include the quoted phrase ("That I was good enough to make you forget/
The only boy who ever broke your heart/ Cause nights like these tear me apart...") but not "Tennessee Waltz." Coinkidinkly, the album is called "Tennessee," so perhaps the announcer subconsciously embedded the word in your memory bank.

I believe I've heard that song- I figured it was just a weird cover of the classic Tennessee Waltz.

This may be a stab in the dark, but the style you described reminds me of The Gaslight Anthem which is currently getting a lot of radio time on some alternative stations. They have a few songs that use the words "waltz" and "heart", including Meet Me By The River's Edge and I Could'a Been a Contender. Nothing about Tennessee, but maybe you misheard.

Oh - so many new songs! Many are being added to my song list, but so far none are the right one. I appreciate the effort though.
I didn't call the station cause its been a couple of weeks now. When I first heard it, I wasn;'t sure if I liked it or not. Still not sure, but would love to give it another listen so I can make up my mind about it and stop it from going through my head.
