Cheesemaking suppliers in New York City?
Specifically, where I can get starter cultures, look into workshops, and maybe hang out and talk to people who know what they're doing? I've looked into Murray's Cheese and done a preliminary google run, but everything I've found is pretty commercial, and mostly geared toward selling artisinal cheeses rather than DIY cheesemaking.
Any ideas?

You may want to contact Saxelby Cheese in the Essex St. Market on the Lower East Side. It's a cheese shop but they can probably steer you in the right direction.

I can't help you with the New York link or where to meet people who are making cheese.
I can give you a very easy DIY link to yogurt cheese making. All you need is milk, a crockpot and some active culture yogurt, and a cheesecloth to drain the yogurt you will make into yogurt cheese. Super easy! I do it every other weekend or so for both yogurt and yogurt cheese.

I found a DIY make-your-own-mozarella kit at the Murray's Cheese outpost in the Grand Central Station market. That may be a good intro, as mozzarella is one of the easiest "first cheeses" you could make.
