MetaFilter Bannings
October 22, 2004 11:40 PM
How many members of MetaFilter have been ex-communicated?
Either short term or permanently?
Or is this more MetaTalk?

Not me personally, but a friend of mine who was a priest got excommunicated.
Actually, it wasn't excommunication exactly, but he had to turn in his priest papers and he's not allowed to get married in a Catholic church. I forget the exact term, but it sucks because he's one of the only deeply religious people I've ever met that I could talk to without feeling like I was being sold something.

Some victims:
Insomnyuk (rude behavior)
real9 (bigotry)
TheJesseHelms (LGF/Mefi incident)
111 (abusing AskMe)
lostbyanecho (self-linking)
I'm sure there's quite a few more.. but I've run out of energy.

Wait.. You mean literally excommunicated? Or thrown out of the Metafilterian Church?

Since I don't think the Catholic church has short term excommunications, I think Metafilter was what was meant.

Oh, well scratch my story then.
Let's be a little more creative in our language next time.

Who was the Billy guy - Billy Maulana or something like that. He kept self-linking. Stavros was booted out for a while, I think? And then there's Stumpy McGee and settle. I miss settle. He got mAxed.

There was someone from the last batch of new users who lasted like three days before getting kicked out.
Did Postroad really get a timeout for his last FPP?

The term you're looking for is "defrocked."
Oh, and wasn't that commie dude also banned (as in commie was in his user name)?

C_D, I'm not sure but I think my neighbors would be upset if I started saying "Mexpelled" even though they wouldn't have a clue what I was talking about.
Sounds like they should get a basket of chips and some salsa as a parting gift.
Thanks for the insights, I had been curious, now my curiosity has been sated.
jmd82, I thought "defrocking" was what priests did to altar boys after Sunday mass?

Yeah! That's it!
And it sounds so much saucier.

Gosh,
Aaron, Evanizer, Lileks, Bunnyfire...
A lot of these people were not screw-ups either. Some of them were the most prolific posters we had. I miss them.

I got a well-deserved timeout for some hijinks (or more for my attitude afterwards, perhaps) with iceberg273 way back when.

xammerboy, Bunnyfire is still with us today, but with a new username and greater serenity. So do not despair.

I could be wrong, but if I remember the incident correctly, Evanizer wasn't mexcommunicated...he left on his own accord after one of the infamous "fat people suck" threads.
