How can you get your EMT back?

Is it possible to be re-certified as an EMT after letting it lapse?

My friend's EMT license expired a couple of years ago (because he was living somewhere where he couldn't do his continuing education credits). He was licensed in California/USA (had both state and federal license).

Is there any way for him to get recertified (classes, test, whatever) or would he have to take the whole class again?

It depends on which state he's currently residing in. Each state has different licensing requirements. Most likely though, he'll have to retake the course and re-test in his current state of residence.
