Learning/self-improvement vaction in Illinois/Iowa?

Next May I'm going to be in Illinois/Iowa for a week with not much to do (long story). Are there any cool places that run week long retreats, intensive courses, or just ways to be immersed in something new alongside interesting people for a few days that you'd recommend? [more inside]

What should I do this week at night in Chicago?

I'm in Chicago at work for the first time ever, and I'm kind of bummed it's so cold and dark and that lots of the usual night tours and such are closed for the winter (because it's so cold and dark). Anything open after 5 you would recommend? [more inside]

Getting around Chicago, stuff to do near Evanston, plus vegan traveler

I'm going to a conference at Loyola University next week. I didn't register early enough to get in the main hotel. The shuttles they're setting up probably won't be enough for me. I could also use recommendations for vegan food in the area. Please help. [more inside]

The best penne arrabbiata in Chicago

What the title says! It's almost my birthday and I want to eat the best penne arrabbiata in Chicago. Bonus points for good atmosphere, burrata, outdoor seating, and easy to get to on public transit, but all of those things are negotiable.

April Chicago trip with Kid. What do?

We are headed to Chicago second week in April with a 10 year old. I've always wanted to take him to the Field museum so that is on the list. What else is a really terrific and uniquely Chicago thing to do with a kid? Doesn't have to be ONLY for kids. I am not interested in a kids' museum, aquarium, or zoo, etc. unless it's a particularly good one - I just feel like we see plenty of those and can do that any time. I'd also love suggestions for any good, unusual, and fun restaurants that a kid might also enjoy. No car.

Fun dinner destinations in Chicago

I'll be heading with a friend to Chicago on 12/1 for a concert. I'd like to go someplace fun and unique for dinner before the show. I would rather not spend more than about $100 for the two of us. [more inside]

What are the hottest improv shows now in Chicago?

I'm taking the IO Theater's intensive improv summer program right now in Chicago. Awesome fun. Me and my classmates are looking for recommendations on the hottest improv shows. Standup too. I've seen Improv Shakespeare and was blown away. Also Hitch*cock and Matt Damon Improv at Annoyance Theatre.

What should I do next week with a few hours in Chicago?

I'll be in Chicago next week for a conference and will have most of the day Tuesday and a small portion of Friday to do what I'd like. I am especially interested in places to photograph (but don't have to limit yourself to that). Any suggestions? I will be staying basically corner of Michigan and Ohio St - not too far from Chicago Riverwalk.

Authentic Chicago deep-dish pizza

My mom and I are meeting up in Chicago in a couple weeks and I'd like to find a non-touristy place to get good deep-dish pizza. I've been to Chicago once and she's never been there. It looks like we'll be near the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center and we'll have all day Saturday and Sunday morning there. Nothing more inside except pizza in ma belleh.

Chicago: Where to see Black Panther on opening day

My partner (white) and our youngest son (black) are in Chicago this morning. The 10yo really wants to see Black Panther, and it occurs to my partner that this could be an opportunity to see it a) on opening day, and b) with a black-majority audience. Where to go? [more inside]

Renting and regularly walking to this Chicago apt - a dumb idea?

Chicagoans! Now is your time to tell me not to worry so much about crime, that it's grossly exaggerated by paranoid outsiders, and that I should just exercise common sense -- and go ahead and rent this place at LaSalle and North Ave in Old Town. [more inside]

What is there to do in Peoria, IL (and why is it so hard to spell)?

Why do I always think Peoria is spelled with an extra I somewhere in the middle? And what can we do there on a Friday afternoon in early March (my husband, I, and our 3 year old son)? Also need reccs for dinner that night and breakfast the next day. Cities of comparable size in MO and IL and IN have been a big disappointment. Help us find the best of Peoria.
