What is this card game?

Card game played by multiple players. Each person has nine cards in front of them in a three by three grid, initially faced down. In turn, players flip these cards over and in some way associate them with other players' revealed cards. Score is kept.
Observed at airport. What is this game?

Some variant of Golf? See the second game on this wikipedia entry.

Was it played super fast? Sounds like it could be a variation of speed, or this other game my friend taught me a while back, but don't remember the name of.

Response by poster: I think it may be Golf; I didn't know there was a nine-card version. They used normal playing cards—two decks, I think. I believe they were from Utah, if that presents any obviousness.

WTF? Nothing like Apples to Apples, EndsofInvention, unless you're playing some very odd homebrew.

I dunno, I just thought that:
"players flip these cards over and in some way associate them with other players' revealed cards."
sounded similar to:
Each of the other players chooses one of their red apple cards that they think is the best match for the green apple card
Hence, "something like ATA", since they are associating cards with other cards "in some way". It was not mentioned whether they were using playing cards or something else.
