book about enchanted sword

I'm trying to remember the title of a book I read about 15 years ago. I think it was called "the sword" It was about an enchanted sword gone bad; enchanted to never leave
it's master or something like that.
One of the scimitars that Drizzt Do'Urden inherits along his journeys behaves like this. I can't remember the specific book (it's been a long time, and those books all seem to run together... main plot line is Drizzt kicks ass all over the world).
Actually, on further review, it's the sword of his arch-nemesis, Artemis Entreri.

Could this be Michael Moorcock's Elric series? I think the sword was named Stormbringer.

The other series, besides Elric, that springs to mind are Fred Saberhagen's Book of Swords (?) series, except that as far as I dimly recall, those things were constantly leaving their "masters."

Best answer: How bout The Misenchanted Sword by Lawrence Watt-Evens? amazon link
The story of a scout named Valder behind enemy lines that gets his sword enchanted by a crazy hermit. The sword does indeed become a killing machine, but it has the minor problem that when drawn, it must taste blood before it can be sheathed again. Once he returns to his own side, he becomes what is effectively an a special ops assassin for this side.
Great book. One of my favorites. It was originally released in the late 80's but Amazon only seems to have the recent reprint. Abe Books has plenty of the original release it seems.
