Upper Canada + Lower Canada = fun!

There are 2 small groups of people, one in Montreal, one in Toronto. Help me plan a low budget Summer event to bring them together.

The two groups have 5 people each. We work together. Various ages and interests. Sports and other activities are fair game.

Can you suggest events that we could get together and do on a weekend day this Summer? I'm thinking we will be driving to some neutral location, possibly Kingston. Maybe we could BBQ at Sandbanks Provincial Park. Any other suggestions for events in and around Kingston?

Budget for the event is a measly $500, but let's say I could get away with $1000.

Ew. Kingston. Why not Ottawa?

Response by poster: james613 is right. Ottawa is too far from Toronto (maybe 4 hours) to be practical in this case.

4 hours from Montreal to Kingston is ok, though?

Response by poster: Google maps says Montreal to Kingston is 281 km vs 252 km for Toronto to Kingston. Last time I drove from Montreal to Kingston it was about 2.5 hours.

Let's focus on the event ideas, though.

Kingston is great. (I live in TO) How about a 1000 island boat trip, hang out in a great brew pub (forgot the name) and even visit the prision museum. (Kingston has many prisons)
Summer or winter?

More than one person from Montreal is willing to socialize with people from Toronto? If you say so.

How old are the groups? Do they like the outdoors? How much money do you have to play with? There is so much to do it depends on what you like to do.

I love the 1000 island region, and Prince Edward Country. There are nice little towns and good food. There are boat excursions (which I've never been on) that look like fun. And since they are pretty touristy you can find lots of information online.

Algonquin Park is also between the two, though it is less convenient to get to. It's one of my favourite places in Ontario.

And even though I live in Toronto, I think Ottawa is a lot of fun in small doses. Meech lake is great.

Sorry, I see you did specify an amount. 1000 Island Cruises are not that expensive. And Kingston is a pretty little town with nice little restaurants and quaint monarchists.

If you have a taste for the bizarre you can tour the site of Ontario's most notorious acts of vigilante violence, the execution of the Black Donneleys

Prince Edward County has a lot to do.

Boat tours out of Rockport (website) are good. If you want to actually stop at Boldt Castle, you'll have to deal with US Immigration, as it's American, but it's very pretty and worth the stop.

Lots of scuba diving in the area too—the St. Lawrence hosts many shipwrecks.

There are a ton of parks in the area around Brockville. If I were you, I might just find a spot where I could rent a campsite for a day, preferably one on a lake with a volleyball net, a fire pit, and canoes available for rent. The sandbanks around Picton are also very nice.

Kingston is very pretty in the summer, and I've spent many fine summers there as a student. There are a couple of things that go on during the summer (Tall Ships festival, Buskerfest) but otherwise it's pretty quiet, so I'm not sure if there'll be enough fun stuff to keep you occupied for more than a day or so if you're looking for capital-E entertainment. It's a great place to lope around and relax, though. And as stated above, Prince Edward County is a good bet, especially if you're into fine dining (which I'm not, but I hear many great things).

On a different tip, I have no idea how reservations are at this time of year, but the last time I camped out at Sandbanks Provincial Park I had an awesome time.
