Heard this sound in the Adirondack mountains recently at night. Very scary sounding. Bird call apps do not match. Any ideas?

Best answer: Fox.

It's almost always a fox and will NEVER be a fisher.

Best answer: Seconding a fox.

If it sounds like a ghost getting murdered, it's a fox.

(I think it's an amazing sound but I agree it's really scary if you have no idea what it is. And still kind of scary if you do.)

Michael McIntyre Is a UK comedian that has a whole stand up routine about how terrifying foxes sound.

ReluctantViking, why do you say that? I grew up in New England and we heard those sounds all the time, and would see fishers but not foxes..... Just curious if there's a notable difference or what...?

Fascinating - thank you, theory! Apparently the screams I heard growing up are foxes, not fishers. Mind blown. This just solidifies my desire to get a trail cam for the backyard woods!
