iPhone camera not taking full size photos

My iPhone 15 running iOS 17.1.1 seemingly took random photos at a size significantly smaller than the sensor. Has anyone run into this problem, or know what's going on?

I took a number of photos this afternoon with the main (26mm) camera. Several of them came out like this example with a big expanse of black on the right and bottom sides. The metadata says the image is 4284 x 4284 pixels but the area of the photo only occupies 3024w x 3528h pixels. The visible portion of the photo is composed as intended.

That was the first photo I took. The next photo filled the full 4284 x 4284 space, the next two had the black borders, they were followed by two full size photos, then four with black borders, two full size, and one with a black border. I've taken a couple of dozen photos since to try and duplicate the problem without any luck (which may be a good thing?).

I did not intentionally change any settings on the camera between photos to make this happen, nor does there appear to be any setting that could accidentally cause this to occur. Anybody else experience this or know what is going on?
