Lonely robot SF story

Looking for an SF story: the humans/intelligent species on a planet left, leaving one robot behind. It is alone for many years; then humans land on the planet. The robot finds them hard to understand, especially their need for sleep. What story is this?

My source told me the robot’s name was Wally, but they may have confused it with Wall-E.

I Googled your question and found this site. It's about robot films and includes some major writers. Maybe you could search there for what you're looking for.

My brane spat out "Richard Cowper" and "cul de sac" but some googling says "Kuldesak". Yea I was young when I read it (there was a 19 and a seventy-something in the year). It made an impression. "Oiling your bumps". Dunno if it's what you're looking for though.
