Help me find this half-remembered fantasy novel

It was about a woman with a gem on her palm who was raised by a ruling family, and sent to a colonized country to rule over/subdue it

She was possibly aware that she was originally from that country, but what she did not remember was that she was one of the former ruling family. She discovered her origins, and eventually rejected her foster country and family, and started to fight for her own people. I think this was the first of a trilogy, and was dedicated in some form to Australian aboriginal children who were removed from their homes.

I probably read this pre-2016, and completely forgot to note down the author, who I promptly forgot.

Could it be The Queen of the Tearling by Erika Johansen?

Response by poster: No, it's not Queen of the Tearling.

The Girl of Fire and Thorns maybe? The description says the gem is in her navel but it's the first in a trilogy beginning in 2011.

Although it doesn't match in some ways, your description reminds me a lot of N. K. Jemisin's The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms, the first of a trilogy.

Response by poster: No, I've read both of the above, and they're good, but neither are the one I remember. I'm pretty sure it wasn't young adult.
