Reality Check on CDC/HHS Headline, Losing Data Tracking the Pandemic

I'm wondering if someone can give me a reality check about the headline regarding the Trump Administration instructing hospitals to give their data directly to HHS, for a database not open to the public. Not starting a politics thread, just need someone who's got a firm grasp on things letting me know what's realistic.

I am prone to controlled but nonetheless severe anxiety about the pandemic – there are elements that plug into childhood shit of mine – and part of my mind is creating a scenario where the data is kept away from us as we get worse, and we're all stumbling around contagious in the dark. Realistically, will hospitals actually obey this? Will the CDC allow itself to be bypassed? Or is this something that might get reversed shortly like the decision about online-only students? To be clear I am asking this question not as the start of a politics Mefi thread but more as a reality check against my anxieties as to what's realistic.
