Who is this author?

I've given up after thirty minutes of searching. This author is a spiritual writer. He wrote a fantastic short essay about church and I think it was in a travel writing volume (one of the Travel Best American series). He writes in a very profound and descriptive way. I'm sorry I don't have any more information.
