Can anyone identify a video game from the 90s I vaguely remember?

I believe it was for NES and came out before '97. In the long prologue, a female character ends up trapped on one side of a broken floor in a collapsing building. A male love interest remains with her instead of escaping with the group. Does anyone remember what this is? I've tried Google and it sounds like it might be in the Final Fantasy series, but I'm not at all certain.

Best answer: It sounds a lot to me like the intro sequence to the first Lufia game, on the SNES. Youtube clip to see if it jogs your memory.

I don't know the game but this website is a database of essentially all NES games and has video previews of the beginnings of each game. Your game sounds like action or adventure, so I would start by sorting by genre if you choose to look for it.

Magnakai mentioned an SNES game, so it's possible what you're looking for isn't an NES game and won't be there.

Response by poster: Thank you both! Magnakai, that's it! I definitely remember some of the combat screens and maps. I can finally put that niggling unknown to rest. Sorry for giving the wrong platform, it was at a friend's house way back when that I played it.

Atinna, thank you for the amazing resource. I'll be using that again.
