Plant nurseries in DC area?

We have friends who just purchased a new home, and we'd love to get a gift certificate to a really good nursery in the DC area. She is an avid outdoor, non-edibles gardener. Can you advise where the best place for us to get the card at?

If she's willing to drive, Merrifield.

Best answer: Behnke's is good and in Maryland, not too far from College Park.

I would say Behnke's for the combination of quality and accessibility.

Best answer: Merrifield is indeed awesome - we would starve if I allowed Mrs. Thistledown carte blanche there. It's out in Northern VA, though, so if that's convenient to your friend it's a winner. Yes they do gift cards.

In DC proper, there is Gingko Gardens on 11th, just a short jaunt from the Navy Yard area. It's a lovely place - tiny compared to Merrifield, but the folks who work there are really, really nice and it's definitely the best place I've found inside the city.

Thirding Behnkes. In addition to having a good selection and reasonable prices, they identified a bunch of mystery shrubs at my house from lousy cell phone photos.

Seconding Gingko Gardens. If your friend is actually in DC or Northern Virginia, it's the best combination of quality, closeness and ease-of-access.

Gingko Gardens and Frager's are my go to nursery choices, both have great selections for nurseries in DC proper.

Response by poster: While i loved the idea of Mrs. Thistledown shop-shop-shopping away at Merrifield, I ended up going with Behnke's since it was the closest option to their new hood. Ginkgo Gardens was the same distance it seemed, but didn't have an easy gift card purchasing option. Thanks for all the answers!
