iTunes 11.0.5, Windows 7, and uneditable preferences.

I am running a fully updated iTunes 11 install on a fully patched Windows 7 machine, and I cannot get iTunes to disable keyboard control. Edit --> Preferences --> Advanced gets me to the check box for "enable full keyboard navigation", but it won't stay off. Related, I suspect, is the lack of track information on the Mini-Player. Everything I've found says that I should turn off Keyboard Navigation in order to get track information to appear on the MiniPlayer. But I can't do that. Is there a secret handshake I don't know, or am I doomed to an only-sort-of-useful MiniPlayer? (and let's not even talk about how the MiniPlayer won't stay on top, even if I've told it "Keep MP on top....")
