first fiction contest

I'm submitting a story to a fiction contest, attaching it to an email. Other than the contest guidelines, is there anything else I need to do to the document or be aware of?

Check out this Writer Beware post on contests for things you might not have thought of.

Unless contest guidelines specify otherwise, put it in standard manuscript format. And make sure to put some kind of cover letter in the body of the email (again, unless specified otherwise). Doesn't have to be long--a line or two can be fine. "Dear Editors, Please find my X-word story, Awesomesauce, attached for your consideration. Signed, larry_darrell."
