Going straight in curved space

Trying to identify a sci-fi short story where I only remember the ending…
The story is set in a distant future, and is told as an account after the fact, by a young person who sets of to discover the end of the world. At the end of the story she's back where she started, and we as readers realise that the whole planet must be build over, with no (easy) access to the surface.
One detail which might come from this story is that you were not allowed to heat anything hotter than a certain temperature, and open flames were outlawed because of the fire hazard.
