How Much to Charge For an Article

Need help figuring out a complicated "how much to charge for an article" situation.

I previously worked in Field A. I now work in Field B, but continue to write and speak on issues related to Field A. When I write, my work is often published in field-specific journals and similar publications. Often, I retain rights to my work after the initial publication.

A previous employer in Field A has approached me, and would like to be able to reproduce my articles to share with clients, etc., as a way of showing they are cutting edge and are connected to accomplished people, even if those people aren't on staff. Great - I'm interested in helping them out. Complication: I have no idea how to price the rights to my work. I can find a lot of info on pricing if I'm selling my articles to publications, but not when I want to sell them in this situation.

For the sake of disucssion, let's assume I can make $1.00 per word for my publications. What should I charge my old employer for the same work?

I've heard 50% of the original price as a rule of thumb for reprints, but I haven't sold many reprints myself.

Are they just providing a link on a website? Or are they wanting to print up hard copies and hand them out?
