Looking for the author/title of a science fiction/fantasy novel read around 1985. Details inside.

Trying to recall the title of a book that I read years ago. Basic plot summary was various groups on the search for an amulet that gave its wearer extraordinary powers of charisma that was last used by Adolf Hitler. The protagonist's history is doing corporate security and the book details how a thief is captured by him when he was representing an insurance company and he basically tortures the guy by beating him to get him to disclose the location of stolen insured goods. A secondary character (Johnny No-name or something) is someone that the protagonist knew growing up in an orphanage - can't recall any particulars except that the guy had a photographic memory and was memorizing the different world's religious texts at one point in his history.

Does this ring a bell for anyone?

Best answer: It doesn't ring a bell for me but I bet someone over at Abe's would know.

Response by poster: Thanks so much for the suggestion, BoscosMom! Rec'd a response ("The Messiah Stone") within hours:

Doug Stavers plays the mercenary game, and every time he plays he wins: in Africa, Central America, Vietnam or in the USA. Now he's on the biggest hunt of his life: to find and seize a certain object that, incredibly, confers the power of absolute belief on its owner. Christ once wore it. So did Mohammed. The last to own it was Adolf Hitler. The next will rule the world. It's code name is "The Messiah Stone".
