Magentofilter?

I'm looking to add some complex product options to an existing Magento install that were previously done rather messily. This is proving troublesome.
I'll try to keep this brief.
I've got two problems, it seems... nested attribute sets, and the need to have thumbnails for options.
Take, for example, a sofa. Currently, all of the options work well but the upholstery selection. As it is, we've got one giant list in Custom Options for upholstery that needs to be manually added to or subtracted from from item to item. What I need are sets of attributes or custom options - so, within 'Fabric' is 'Fabric Style 1' and 'Fabric Style 2' that contain within them the colorways of the style and can be added as a unit.
Within this, I need a way to store a thumbnail for each of these so that a visitor can make a visual selection within the shopping process. Currently, we have a popup with all the option thumbnails hardcoded in, and the option still needs to be selected on the main page from the drop-down.
What direction should this go, if it's even possible with Magento?
