Can't remember, need help: Work of fiction about evolution

My Amazon- and Google-fu have failed me. Read this book 6-7 years ago. Novel about evolution. Started with small creature (mammalian, I think) and followed it's life story over millennia as it changed into next evolutionary form, and so on until it became hominid.

Ring any bells? Thanks in advance.

Response by poster: Darnit, you're right. For some reason I briefly considered that but dismissed it. Had it in my head it wasn't Baxter. Derp.
