Help me build and paint my Blood Bowl team

It's been awhile since I've painted any wargaming miniature, but now I kinda like the idea of going back to it. I was looking for a small project to start with and I thought I could paint the Chaos Blood Bowl team I use in the videogame version. Problem is, the Games Workshop BB minis are old and crappy, and I'd like to keep the violent sport style that Cyanide used for the characters.

Beastmen should be easy to do using warhammer fantasy miniatures.
My problem at the moment are Chaos Warriors because in the game they look more like evil football players than guys in platemail. I assume I'm gonna model some parts of them with Green Stuff or Milliput, I'd just like to use some pieces from other models (not necessarily Games Workshop ones) to speed up my work and make my life easier. So, what do you think I could use?

Impact Miniatures has a bunch of "ElfBall" miniatures as well as links to other alternate manufacturers.

Your local gaming shop likely has many off-brand types of miniatures that will be perfectly acceptable substitutes for the blood bowl official figurines. Also note that some of the older ones are a lot cooler than the newer versions too; I've seen them around on the Ebay. My brother in law fabricated an entire army using paperclips and some creatively molded epoxy, too, so if you're reasonably crafty you could go that route.

I may be stating the obvious here, but regular ol' Chaos Space Marines look an awful lot like evil football players already, particularly if you take off their backpacks. Granted, the power armour is a little much for Blood Bowl, but at least the upper body with the fairly ridiculous shoulder pads pretty much scream "football player".

So, perhaps some converted Chaos Space Marines? Or Khorne Beserkers?

Best answer: You can get some Chaos Fantasy bitz from places like Bitz Barn that will let you customize your minis.

For Chaos, I'd suggest trying to track down some plastic House Goliath Necromunda figures. You can then repose them with green stuff and add bitz to make them more Chaosy.

Other possible sources for plastic figures would be the old plastic Catachans, but their scale would be a bit off for Chaos bitz. Larger figures, like the old metal Strigoi from Vampire Counts could also work pretty well. Just start browsing around on the bitz sites and who knows what you'll be able to pick up!

Best answer: Argh. I can't believe I forgot the new plastic Marauders from WH Fantasy. Lots of muscle there and the scale would be right for Chaos Warrior heads.

One other trick from the brother in law files; it's pretty damned easy to cut off arms and heads off of figurines you like and then replace them onto bodies you like. This way gives you a ridiculous amount of customization, especially with Chaos critters, who tend to get extra arms or claws or the like as they go on.

It's been a while since I have played any GW games, but if you can get your hands on any Chaos based plastic minis, simply take them and kitbash them. You can file, sand, glue, melt, etc. them to be what you want easily, a lot easier than white metal.

I know this, because I made a Space Marine BB team, complete with Terminator blockers (w/ Lightning Claws) and Dreadnought "Ogres"...
